"The best day of my life"
When a young member of HM’s EXIT team ran into Tasos* on the streets of Athens, he was surprised that the Roma homeless man remembered his name. Tasos also remembered spending time at Porto Astro with other refugees some two years prior.
"It was the best day of my life. I still remember how we glorified God in silence. It was so beautiful, and I was full of joy." The beautiful facilities at Porto Astro had remained etched in his memory.
Tasos, who is 60 years old, has struggled with alcohol for years. He’s heard many times about the love of Christ, however, his visit to Porto Astro in the summer of 2019 was a very important day for him. It was the first time he felt peace in the presence of God.
A few days after visiting Porto Astro, Tasos was picked up by the police and transferred to a remote island to be imprisoned. He expected to serve a long sentence for some previous misdemeanors, but happily says that "a miracle happened—instead of an eighteen-month sentence, they kept me for only a few days and then released me!"
The HM team lost track of Tasos until last November. They met him while passing out food to the homeless of Athens. The following week, the team brought him a blanket to keep him warm and invited him to a Bible study. He gladly accepted and now participates on a weekly basis, experiencing the joy of learning about Jesus Christ through the Bible.
