Saaede: "Writing and reading changed my life"

"I can finally text my family and friends, read a book or go online! It's the best feeling" says with a big smile 35-year-old Afghan Saaede, who is learning to read and write at our place in Kypseli.

She had never been to school in Afghanistan, but for the past 1.5 year she has started Farsi and English lessons and now a new world of knowledge has opened up before her. "I want to become independent and take care of things that concern me on my own, like filling out documents," she says with a hint of impatience.

Her next goal, after mastering reading and writing in her mother tongue, is to learn another. Perhaps, of a country she will go to in the future, as she knows that only then will she be able to find a job and at the same time feel at home.

Saade has two boys, 3 and 7 years old, who are very proud of their mum. The oldest is so excited and happy, he told her that he will pray for her so that she will have strength when she reads!

Besides classes and practical support, Saade attends the workshops we have for arts and crafts and fabric dyeing - the latter of which she believes may pave the way for her to get a job in the clothing industry.

We are very proud of Saade's perseverance and her love of learning, which is a shining example to all of us!
