Porto Astro: A Place of Healing for the Nations!
"Lord, find me a place where the Christian and Islamic worlds meet and I will serve You there, so that the gospel will be made known".
This is what Costas Macris, the founder of HM, prayed again and again back in the 1980s, until the Lord led him to Porto Astro at Scorponeria bay, 90 km north of Athens. The property was ideal because it met all the criteria: relatively close to Athens, next to the sea, away from crowds, and in a bay protected from extreme weather conditions.
The prayers and donations from Greece and abroad soon made this dream a reality. Since then, the idyllic bay with its mountainous beauty and breathtaking views has become "home" for people of diverse cultural backgrounds each summer and throughout the year in increasing measure.
Ukrainians, Roma, Afghans, Greeks, volunteers from abroad, teenagers, children, persecuted women, all find a peaceful refuge in the small wooden cabins which emerge among the olive groves. During summer programs the kitchen and gathering areas are buzzing with life, while the seafront is filled with happy voices. Young and old indulge in sports activities such as canoeing, sup, climbing, volleyball, archery, football, basketball, trampoline, and even woodworking workshops.
Each evening after sunset, thousands of stars become visible in the beautiful night sky, captivating those who gaze in wonder. The unique beauty of the landscape—which manifests the glory of its Creator— combined with the countless prayers, revivals and baptisms which have occurred on this property over the years, makes it a very special place indeed. It is touching to think that many current staff, especially of ethnic origin, either heard the gospel or were discipled and trained at this property before beginning their ministry career.
Artur Hoxha, Porto Astro’s head of ministry and facilities, likes to describe the property by using one word: "Blessed"! Artur, originally from Albania, has served with HM for twenty-five years, and has been the property manager for the last seven. His fellow Albanian, Hamza Hoxha, has also served at Porto Astro for many years as food, land cultivation and livestock manager. They are joined by their Greek co-worker, Samuel Tsoutsas, who organizes and coordinates programs and volunteer groups all year long.
