Free hairdressing courses for refugees

Scissors, combs, spray, hairdressing dolls and let's get started! From the beginning of October we started a new series of free hairdressing courses for refugee women. Every Thursday our students from Iran and Ukraine meet at the Skills Training Center to learn the most sought-after haircuts, under the guidance of experienced Canadian hairstylist Kim.

The place is buzzing with life and excitement. Communication is challenging, as it is often done through mobile translation apps, proving conclusively that "If there's a will, there's a way".

"There is no better feeling than learning something new," says Iranian Parisa, who is eager to learn the art of hairdressing well, so that she can combine it professionally with other beauty services, and thus be able to earn a decent income. On the other hand, Liudmila, from Ukraine, explains that she enjoys good company during the course and how important it is for her to feel that she belongs to a community.

Liliana Ball, the center's manager, does not want the women to just learn an art, but she engages the ladies with interest and love, caring for their overall well-being. This is why the classes begin with Bible study, prayer and fellowship. "In this time, women can share stories from their lives, express themselves and feel like they have companions on life's journey."
