The Need

For decades Greece has served as a gateway country for millions of refugees traveling predominately from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. For varied reasons they are fleeing their homelands, choosing to leave behind families, jobs, and their cultures in the hope of new opportunities and freedoms. Due to Greece’s location between their homelands and other countries in Western Europe, many refugees travel through Greece on their journey. Refugees are often in Greece for years while seeking asylum and awaiting approval to move to other countries.

Our Response

We believe the Lord seeks to use these circumstances as an opportunity to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard of His saving love. The extended time refugees spend in Greece provides the opportunity to create passionate disciples who will continue to share the good news of Jesus when their journey continues. AXIA 113 seeks to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ through providing essential care such as showers, laundry services, clothing, meals, and general health care services; the kindness and love shown while providing these physical resources communicates the gospel message in word and deed, introducing refugees to Jesus as the one true source of life and to the path of a life of discipleship.

The definition of AXIA in Greek, worth or value, sums up how AXIA 113 lives out Psalm 113 to the refugees that we serve and teach. In Psalm 113 God sees worth in those in need and raises them to places of honor. Our belief is that through providing physical and spiritual care AXIA 113 affirms the intrinsic worth of refugees; this affirmation is shown through the meeting of essential needs with dignity, while also raising the hope of eternity by sharing the good news of Jesus. Our mission is to point people to God, who ultimately raises them to a place of eternal honor.
